Our secret addiction

Geschreven door Ben Hendrix op . Geplaatst in Blog

Most of us are secretly (that is to ourselves) addicted to something common that is preventing us from being truly happy and successful.  So I would like to blog about this addiction.  We are even enabling our children more access to this terrible addiction.  Just as important is that we are addicted ourselves.  And that is the smart phone.  Yes, the phone is smart, but how and how often we use it makes us dumb.  Do you realize that around 95 percent of the people that owns one are no more than an arm’s length away from them at any time?  Do you realize that this is replacing alcohol and fatigue in being the number one cause of traffic accidents?   Have you noticed that at almost any social gathering, with the key word being social, that most people are on their smart phones?  How social is that?  Sadly, most of us are not doing mental growth types of things with them, but social type of things like Facebook, chats, and other types of social media whilst we should be connecting with those physically within reach of us.  I have so many Facebook friends that I can keep up with virtually every day, but not my real friends with whom I can physically interact with.  Stop wasting your life and time on far friends and strangers that are doing fun and exciting things and get up off your butts and contact people that are physically closer and get to actively living.  I challenge you to call someone close to you TODAY and physically do something with them TODAY!

Say it now

Say it now, face to face

Yesterday on my way to the gym I saw a rainbow.  Not the first time I have seen a rainbow of course, but somehow I felt inspired to take a picture of it. Five to be exact.  Growing up people used to say that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  I remember when I was about 9 I actually found the end of the rainbow, but no pot of gold.  I thought this must be the beginning of the rainbow.

At about the same time I was being enamored with the  rainbow, a great childhood friend of mine was about to have his last day on earth.  He later died that morning from a heart attack at age 50. This morning I received the news and I wept.  Every time I went to America I had planned on seeing him physically since we had such great conversations on facebook, but something always came up and it was always me that cancelled.  We knew what was going on in each other’s lives and kept each other up to date.  And now, he is gone and my heart aches greatly.  I remember so many things about him.  Unfortunately, I also remember not going by or even contacting him when I was in Lenoir.

No TV

With so much darkness in the world we often forget to look for the light.  We see and hear of so much evil and wrong doing that we too often not see the love, kindness and the good works of others.  We grow despondent and angry when we think about all the things we don’t have and stop being thankful for what we have, like our health, and loved ones.

I started this out with “we”, but these are the things that I, myself sometimes feel.  I want to say right now,” dear lord I thank you for the light in the darkness, my health, my wife and children, my family and friends far and near.   I realize that if I am not grateful for what I have,  I will receive, see, nor appreciate anything else.”

Time goes by so quickly, that sometimes we do not notice that after our birth we are on a journey to leave.  It is what we do on the journey that is important.  Don’t spend life watching others enjoy it, but get out there and enjoy it yourself.

Hugging

Yesterday while visiting my in-laws at the camping I looked at my wife and my boys and realized that these days together are numbered.  There is a song called, “Everything must change” and it had never hit home like the last couple of weeks.  Shawn is 14 and I just realized the times are changing.  He is growing up so fast and I couldn’t be prouder of him.  He is making excellent grades in school, plays football on the Dutch national team and the captain of the baseball team.  Even more than that, Shawn is a better human being.  I admire him so much and the person he is and is becoming.  Yesterday at the camping I gave him a big hug.  Nothing unusual, we hug often, but this time it felt different.  I will be strong of course, but as the days go by, Shawn is moving closer to the door.

Jacky, my oldest sweet daughter, is a blessing to me as well.  She is a strong woman now and makes me proud to be her daddy. She left me for a while and now she is back, stronger than ever! She brings the joy in my life and is Joe’s role model.  He couldn’t find a better one.  I know how to handle Joe from Jacky.

Live to be 120 years old

I will live to be 120 years old

Last Wednesday I gave a lecture at the Rotary Club in Apeldoorn and I like to tell people about my father and some of the great things he has done.  One of the favorite thing my father would say was, “I will live to be 120 years old or will die trying” and I would always say, “well, he didn’t make it, but he did die trying”, for which everyone would laugh.

Hello World,
